Christchurch Quake

On Saturday morning at 4.30 a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Christchurch which has left an estimated $2 billion clean up cost!  Around 500 buildings have been damaged in some way or another, and services such as water, power and sewerage are still being re-connected, but the majority of the city now has working power and water.  Thankfully the quake struck at the time it did, otherwise there could have been deaths to deal with.  As it stands there are only a couple of residents injured!

News of the quake circled the globe where some agencies have been comparing it to the one in Haiti which was far more devastating because of the lack of building codes and the distance Christchurch was from the epicentre.  Another good comparison can be found on the NY Times column Dot Earth.

Below is a list of links from various news agencies like TVNZ, and the NZ Herald that are covering the event.  I hope you find them of interest.
